English with Secondary Education Licensure
The Bachelor of Arts in English with licensure for Secondary Education requires completion of the Foundational Core and 48 semester hours in the subject matter concentration. Courses include Masterpieces of World Literature, Intro. To American Literature, Intro to British Literature, and Mass Media to name a few. The Secondary Education Licensure portion, includes 37 credit-hours of education focused courses. Some of these include: Teaching Methods, Classroom Management, Cultural Competency, Technology, and Developmental Psychology. This degree is a 120 credit hour degree designed to be completed in four years. The licensure track also includes the passing of state exams, student teaching, and recommendation by Oakland City University’s School of Education.
If you are not interested in the licensure track, you can add a non-licensure Education minor to the Bachelor of Arts in English which requires 25 credit hours of professional education courses including Classroom management, Exceptional Children, Development Psychology, and English Teaching Methods. State testing and student teaching are not required since this is a non-licensure track.
The English: Secondary Education Program is nationally recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
