Mission of the Chapman Seminary

Conscious of the call of God, honoring our ties to General Baptists, and mindful of the Church universal, Chapman Seminary seeks to develop, through the professional education of men and women, the spiritual, moral, and intellectual maturity necessary for effective leadership in the church.

Learning Outcomes of the Seminary are that our graduates will:

Chapman holds that a properly trained minister would develop in three primary dimensions: thinking theologically, living faithfully, and serving effectively. These broad dimensions act as primary goals of the program and are met by holistically addressing cognitive, affective, and behavioral domains. Chapman calls the interweaving of these dimensions and domains the Tapestry of Theological Education. The three main learning dimensions for each degree program are made more explicit by developing specific program learning outcomes that support the larger dimensions of the Tapestry:

Master of Divinity & Master of Divinity with a concentration in Pastoral Care

  • Evaluate cultural context in ministry practice
  • Foster spiritual growth of self & others

Educational Effectiveness

Chapman Seminary is committed to developing the spiritual, moral, and intellectual maturity necessary for effective leadership in the Church. The school has developed a variety of tools, both quantitative and qualitative, to assess the extent to which students are achieving the outcomes of the degrees they are pursuing. The faculty regularly reviews this assessment data to measure the effectiveness of Chapman’s programs and for planning further improvements. Chapman Seminary provides ample support to ensure student success.

A recent survey of placement data offers encouraging evidence of the integrity of Chapman Seminary’s degree programs:

Master of Divinity & Master of Divinity with a concentration in Pastoral Care

  • 75% of graduates over the last twelve years (2007-2018) were involved in some kind of vocational ministry within the first year after their graduation
  • 65% of graduates from the last twelve years (2007-2018) are currently involved in vocational ministry

Doctor of Ministry

  • 100% of graduates over the last twelve years (2007-2018) were involved in vocational ministry within a year after their graduation
  • 25% of graduate over the last twelve years (2007-2018) are currently involved in vocational ministry

Even though the Chapman Seminary is welcoming to students of all Christian traditions, we have a specific mission to honor the ties of the institution to the General Association of General Baptists. Placement data also supports the claim that the Chapman Seminary is effective in providing training to leaders within the sponsoring denomination. Over the last eleven years, 38% of all graduates have had a placement in a General Baptist church or ministry since graduation.
