Enrollment on the Rise
Oakland City University records its largest main campus enrollment since 2012
September 4, 2020 - Oakland City, IN. Oakland City University announces its largest main campus enrollment since 2012 with 485 undergraduate (356) and graduate students (129). The main campus enterprise is one of the three educational enterprises of the university along with the non-traditional enterprise and the prison education enterprise. Those enterprises operate on a different enrollment calendar than the main campus enterprise. Overall, the university enrolls about 1,400 students in its three educational enterprises.
The increase in enrollment on the main campus is attributed to a stable influx of new students, a higher retention of returning students, and an increase in graduate students. The incoming new student number has remained stable for the past three years. Given the COVID pandemic, the university was pleased to have enrolled the same number of new students as it did last year. We believe that students and their families are looking for a place like Oakland City University because we offer high quality academics consisting of a liberal arts foundation and career focused majors delivered in a Christian environment.
This fall’s enrollment is a 11.4% increase over Fall 2019 and a 27% increase since 2017. “We believe that the university is headed in the right direction,” stated Dr. Ron D. Dempsey, president of OCU. “Our new recruitment strategies and Career Pathways programs have attracted the attention of prospective students and their families.” Dr. Dempsey was most pleased with the increase in retention of our returning students and noted that “retention of our students is crucial in maintaining the health and stability of the university.” Our graduate programs in education, Christian ministry, and business continue to gain momentum as Oakland City University becomes well-known for producing leaders in these areas.
Oakland City University is excited about the future and the trends it is witnessing in its enrollment. The university is confident that these enrollment trends will continue as it highlights many new initiatives such as the Center for Calling and Career, new majors in Creative Technologies and Computer Science, our intercollegiate athletics transition to the River State Conference of the NAIA, addition of new sports such as Track and Field, and new student opportunities such as Success Coaches, digital badging, and E-sports.
