The Great Command - Music Ambassadors
The Great Command was formed in 2013 with the birth of Oakland City University’s Worship Arts Program. Much like Earthlight, The Great Command travels the country leading worship at youth events, church services, and OCU’s annual SoulFest concert. Students have the opportunity to experience traveling, singing, and producing Contemporary Christian Music as well as gaining experience in sound mixing, engineering, and the business aspect of the music industry. Although the style and sound has changed over the last two years as students have come and gone, The Great Command’s mission has always been to share the love of Christ with others through music. Each year, the composition of the group is different, based on the talent that auditions.
Become a Part of The Great Command
Auditions for The Great Command are generally held during the first week of the school year. Students who are interested in auditioning should prepare two songs to perform, preferably one slow and one fast. Vocalists must make arrangements for an accompanist or bring a CD with an accompaniment track. A piano and drum set will be provided, and a sound system will be available for those auditioning on other instruments. Students are welcome to audition on multiple instruments and/or as a vocalist.
What are we looking for?
The Great Command is looking for guitarists, bassists, percussionists, keyboardists, vocalists, sound engineers, and crew members.
Scholarships and Benefits
Scholarships are awarded to members of The Great Command based on the student’s individual academic financial aid package. A clothing allowance is also given to each student, and a dress code is established every year. All of the students’ expenses paid while on the road.
Requirements and Responsibilities
Members of The Great Command are on contract with the university and must maintain a lifestyle of integrity. Along with following the OCU student handbook, members of The Great Command:
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0.
- Must not be on academic probation.
- Must not be on social probation.
It is important for members to understand that The Great Command is a ministry opportunity! All members must have and demonstrate a relationship with Jesus Christ. They must also be comfortable sharing their testimony with others, talking with people they meet about Jesus, and talking on stage.
The Great Command requires each member to be dedicated to making ALL rehearsals and performances unless pre-approved by the manager. The fall semester, especially, requires a considerable time commitment since the group is learning new music and getting ready for their first services. The first few weeks of the school year generally hold fairly long rehearsal nights, and weekday schedules will be made according to the class schedules of the members.
All weekends during the school year are open for TGC bookings, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter break weekends. Members must keep all weekends available for traveling with the group until the bookings are finalized.
