July 24, 2012 at 2:05 PM

We are pleased to announce that Oakland City University now offers a Specialization in Addiction Counseling. The state of Indiana has recently declared that bachelor level individuals may be eligible to obtain licensure as a Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC).

The state requires that students major in Addiction Counseling, Psychology, or a related field and take the following courses:  Addiction Theory, Psychoactive drugs, Addiction counseling skills, Theories of personality, Developmental psychology, Abnormal psychology, Treatment planning, Cultural competency, Ethics and professional development, and participate in a 350 hour supervised practicum, internship, or field experience.

All of these courses are now offered at Oakland City University’s main campus. Additionally, most of these courses fit into the requirements for the Psychology program at OCU. Thus, students may major in Psychology and earn a Specialization in Addiction Counseling by taking an additional 3-4 courses, which fit into the required electives needed to reach the 120 hour minimum for graduation.
