Oakland City Women Close Out 2009 With VictoryApril 19, 2010 at 2:27 PM
Oakland City, IN - Oakland City hosted the Lady Bulldogs from Ferris State University Thursday, December 31, in their final game of 2009. The Lady Oaks pulled out a close victory by a final score of 85-74 thanks in large part to forcing Ferris State to commit 26 turnovers. There were 51 fouls called in the game, 28 were called on the the Lady Bulldogs and 23 on the Lady Oaks.
The game was very close throughout the first half, with neither team leading by more than seven, a lead held by Ferris State at the 10:17 mark at 22-15. The Lady Oaks were able to rally behind solid free throw shooting and 11 first half points by Kayla Sutton to take a 43-40 halftime lead.
Free throws by Sarah Roth and Jane Barclay, combined with a three pointer by Berna Miranda and a jumper by Roth helped the Lady Oaks score the first nine points of the second half to open up a twelve point advantage at 52-40. The Lady Bulldogs slowly got back into the game, tying the score at 61-61 with ten minutes to play. Back to back jumpers by Rachel Moore and Kayla Sutton started a 7-0 Oakland City run to take the lead for good. In the end the Lady Oaks won by eleven points, their largest lead of the game, thanks to hitting nine of their last 12 free throws in the waning minutes of the game.
Leading the way for Oakland City was Samantha Stahl with 20 points, followed by Kayla Sutton with 13, Berna Miranda with 12, Sarah Roth with 11 and Kristi McVey with 10. Jane Barclay led the Lady Oaks with eight rebounds while Roth, Barclay and Sutton each led the team with two blocks apiece. The Lady Bulldogs were led in scoring by Tricia Principe with 16 and rebounding by Tiara Adams who tallied a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.
The Lady Oaks return to action Saturday, January 2, when they travel to face the University of Alabama-Huntsville. The game tips at 5:15 pm.
