Oakland City Wins Homecoming Thriller Over UrbanaApril 13, 2010 at 4:35 PM
Oakland City, IN - The Mighty Oaks, welcoming the 1960 NAIA National tournament team, hosted the Urbana University Blue Knights Saturday, January 16, in the Johnson Center. Oakland City was able to hold off the Blue Knights, thanks to Jared Maners season high 30 points, and win by the final score of 80-74.
The first half saw Urbana lead the game for the first ten minutes as the Mighty Oaks struggled to find their rhythm. However, after trailing by as many as five points, Oakland City took their first lead of the game at 19-16, a lead they would never give up despite high-pressure defense by the Blue Knights. Jared Maners scored 11 in the first half and Josh Wilmes pulled down six rebounds despite getting into early foul trouble.
The Blue Knights kept looking as if they would at any time take over the game, but the Mighty Oaks proved to be too much to handle as each time Urbana made a run the Mighty Oaks responded with one of their own.
The Mighty Oaks were led in scoring by Jared Maners with 30 points. Nate Schumacher added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Hopf scored 17 while leading the team in rebounding with 12. Josh Maggard continued his solid play with five points, eight assists and a game high four steals. Jeremiah Mitchell, despite scoring only two points and pulling down a single rebound, held Urbana's offence in check much of the game with his stifling defense.
The Mighty Oaks improved to 10-6 on the season and are set to travel to face Free Will Baptist on Tuesday, January 19, at 7:00 pm before returning home to face off against Temple Baptist Saturday, January 23, at 3:00 pm.
