Mighty Oaks Defeat Ohio Mid-Western College Rams to Take CCIT ChampionshipMarch 15, 2012 at 1:18 AM
Oakland City University's men's basketball team met its final test on Wednesday night in the Johnson Center, facing the Ohio Mid-Western College Rams for the 2012 Christian College Invitational Tournament Championship. The Mighty Oaks proved up to the challenge, winning the game 83-82 in a hard fought battle.
Mitch Stahl capped off an incredible season, scoring a team high 21 points. Maurice Fuller finished his freshman campaign by posting 20 points, while Brandon Morton added 14 scores. Eric Head, playing his final game in OCU blue and white, notched eight points while joining Morton with a game high eight rebounds. Morton also had three blocked shots, while Stahl, Fuller and Cameron LeFear each handed out three assists.
The Rams were led in scoring by junior Greg Howard, who put up a game high 28 points, followed by 15 points from freshman Marquez Johnson. Brandon Smith and Nick McCoy each added 13 points to the Rams' side of the ledger.
The Mighty Oaks shot 25-51 (49.0%) from the field, making 4-15 (26.7%) from beyond the three point arc. OCU was able to connect on a season best 29-33 (87.9%) from the free throw line. Ohio Mid-Western made 26-60 (43.3%) of their shot attempts, including 10-19 (52.6%) from deep, and hit 20-27 (74.1%) from the charity stripe.
The home team held a 39-29 advantage on the glass, pulling down one fewer on the offensive side, 11-10. OCU handed out just 13 assists while committing 18 turnovers, while the Rams had 10 of each statistic.
Adding on to the team championship, Mitch Stahl was named Tournament Most Valuable Player, while Eric Head and Maurice Fuller joined him on the All-Tournament Team. Ohio Mid-Western's Nick McCoy and Greg Howard were also given All-Tournament honors.
