Men's Golf Team Kicks Off September 4.May 6, 2010 at 8:25 AM
The Mighty Oaks will take to the course for the two day Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational in Owensboro. OCU returns 7 players from last season, as well as, a JUCO transfer. The team has been putting in time on the course at Prides Creek Golf Course in Petersburg preparing for their 6 tournament slate this fall.
"I'm very excited by the effort the guys are putting out," says Coach Brick Briscoe. "I think this is a critical time in our program's development because the hard work we've done over the last year is starting to show up on the scores they are bringing in."
The Oaks are leaning on a core of 5 "healthy players" as 3 young men are on the disabled list. Senior Mikel Breeden, Juniors Carter McDavid, Shawn Warner and Sophomores Ryan Boone and Phillip Riggs (a transfer from Lincoln Trail, IL) will be counted on to carry the load in the first few matches until their teammates get healthy. Seniors Josh Dowdy and Brett Chitwood, along with Junior Jason Craft are nursing injuries that are keeping them off the course.
"The five guys who are able to play are really stepping up to the plate. I have faith they will find out a lot about themselves and the game of golf in the process." says Briscoe. "I can't wait for the other guys to come back, but we'll be fine however it works out and that's a testament to these young me."
