Lady Oaks Defeat Shorthanded CougarsApril 19, 2010 at 2:28 PM
Oakland City, IN - The Lady Oaks hosted the Ohio University-Lancaster Cougars Saturday afternoon in the Johnson Center, winning by the final score of 83-64. The Lady Oaks, winning for the first time this season, improve their record to 5-9 on the year while the OU-Lancaster Lady Cougars, playing only six players, drop to 11-6 on the year.
The first half saw the Lady Cougars jump out early, scoring thirteen of the first eighteen points to take an eight point advantage. OU-Lancaster continued to build on their early lead, stretching it to as many as eleven points at 23-12 before the Lady Oaks surged back into the game with an 11-0 run to tie the game at twenty-three points each. The visiting Cougars held onto a one point advantage with thirty seconds remaining in the first half before Sam Stahl connected on two free throws before drilling a near half court shot as the horn sounded to send the Lady Oaks to the locker room with a four point half time lead.
In the second half, the Lady Oaks slowly distanced themselves from the Lady Cougars, thanks to forcing eleven turnovers as well as connecting on 5-10 three point shots. Oakland City never gave OU-Lancaster any chance to come back in the game and prevailed by nineteen points, the final score being 83-64.
Oakland City was led in scoring by Sam Stahl with 23 points, followed by Kristi McVey's 16 and Kayla Sutton's 13. McVey also led the team with eleven rebounds, five assists and three steals. The Lady Cougars were led in scoring by Keri Callihan with 23 points, while Jessica Cordle tallied a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go with her game high 3 blocked shots.
The Lady Oaks take the floor again Saturday, January 16, in the Johnson Center on Homecoming Day. The game is scheduled to tip off at 1:00 pm following the announcement of the Homecoming King and Queen selections.
