On June 1, 2007, the Oakland City University Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Dr. Alton Davis as the eleventh President of Oakland City University. Dr. Davis is an alumnus, former trustee, church founder and businessman. He currently resides in Walnut Creek, California with Frances, his wife of 38 years. They have three children and four grandchildren.

Dr. Davis says most of his life has been spent in and around Oakland City University.

He first came to Oakland City College in 1944 at the age of five when his father, a General Baptist minister, enrolled in college. His next experience came nineteen years later in 1959 when he himself enrolled as a ministerial student. He met his wife, the former Frances Liles of Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the college in 1959 and they were married in 1960. In that same year he became pastor of New Liberty General Baptist Church in Coe, Indiana.

Immediately following his graduation in 1961, Dr. Davis attended the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and in 1964 received his Master of Divinity degree. Michael, the first of his three children, was also born that year followed three and six years later by daughter Julie and son Philip.

Upon his graduation from seminary that May, Dr. Davis was called as pastor of Main Street General Baptist Church in Boonville, Indiana, and in the fall was asked to serve on the Board of Trustees of the College. When Dr. Bernard A. Loposer resigned in 1973, Dr. Davis served as interim president until Dr. James Murray was elected president April 15, 1974.

In 2000, Dr. Davis was awarded the honorary degree, Doctor of Divinity, for his many years of service to the University.

Dr. Davis commented, “After forty-three years serving as a trustee under six presidents and watching the school’s tremendous growth under the leadership of Dr. Murray, I consider it a special privilege to once again serve as interim during the search for a new president.”
