OCU and WTVW-TV Team-Up for Oakland City University Academic Challenge
Dr. Ray Barber, President of Oakland City University, is pleased and excited to announce that beginning Sunday, September 25th, at 7:30 p.m. on Local 7, WTVW-TV, Oakland City University will present, in conjunction with the National Academic Quiz Tournaments, the Oakland City University “Academic Challenge”, a contest of knowledge and quick recall, each week through May 27th.
Eighteen tri-state area high schools will compete for the championship, and Oakland City Univer-sity will award the five members of the champi-onship team a four-year, full tuition scholar-ship to Oakland City University. The five run-ner-up team members will each be awarded a four-year, three-fourths tuition scholarship to Oakland City University.
Each week, two tri-state area high school academic teams will “square off” in a double elimination academic challenge tourna-ment. Each team will consist of four team members, with each team having one alternate team member. All five winning team members and all five runner-up team members will be awarded the scholarships.
“I think this investment (over $650,000.00) speaks volumes about Oakland City University’s commitment to education in the tri-state.” stated Bob Freeman, Executive Producer of the program, “This commit-ment will make the value of the prizes one of the largest, if not the largest, for similar television shows around the country.”
“Oakland City University has been meeting the academic needs of students throughout the tri-state area since 1885,” added Dr. Barber, “The Oakland City University Academic Challenge is a another way for OCU to continue to encourage students to challenge their minds and to provide parents, teachers, and school administrators an opportunity to support tri-state area students.”
The 34-week televised contest, starting September 25th (2011) and continuing each week through the championship match on May 27th (2012), will be hosted by Local 7 WTVW Chief Meteorologist Ron Rhodes.
The TV game show format will feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration on aca-demic curriculum, current events, sports, and popular culture questions, with the championship team qualifying for the National Academic Quiz Tournament High School National Championship.
“At OCU, we are be proud to be hosting the Oakland City University Academic Challenge as just one more way to invest in students and their future educational pursuits,” finished Dr. Barber.
