Take a Break!

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Spring is in the air and on my mind! I just got back from Spring Break in East Tawas, Michigan. Yes, I went North instead of South. Most would think that is crazy, but I still had an amazing time. I consider it as my last goodbye to winter.

It was beautiful to see Lake Huron and Tawas Bay in their frozen form. I traveled to the Tawas Point Lighthouse and the beaches, looked at all the amazing summer vacation homes, shopped downtown, and ate at the local restaurant. My experience would not have been possible without my roommate, whose grandmother owned a vacation home there.

Other students traveled to the beaches of Florida, soaking up the sun on a hot day. Some went to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Despite the gas prices and economic times, the students of Oakland City University were eager to enjoy themselves and each other.

That’s what’s great about the friends I have met here. We all come from different places and have had different experiences that we can learn from each other. My friends and I are close and want to spend as much time together before we graduate. I’m lucky enough that we all live in the Southern Indiana region and traveling to see one another is convenient.

I’ve recently become obsessed with the travel channel and the need to see the world. It’s great that I have international friends and get to learn from them about their cultures.

My encouragement to college students and prospective college students is to have an open mind to different cultures and ways of life. Live it to the fullest and see all that you can. That’s what college is about, and OCU provided me that chance with its close social environment.

So…You Want to Know More About OCU?

I’m excited to tell you about OCU and my time here.  I have met so many great people and made friends that I will never forget.  The people here have made an impact on my life and helped me become more comfortable with myself.  I’m from the small town of Shoals, IN and Oakland City is very comparable to what I am used to.  I believe this made the transition into college life easier for me.  Your friends become your family, and you depend upon each other in times of need.  I’m extremely glad that I chose to come to OCU.

Oakland City University is a small campus, and it is easy to get involved here and broaden your horizons.  I’ve been exposed to so many different opportunities to improve my leadership abilities and professionalism as a business major.  I am currently serving as the Student Government Association President.  I recommend to any student who is considering OCU, to explore the clubs and organizations on campus or in the community.  They are a great way to meet people and make friends.

I’m a senior majoring in Business Administration, with concentrations in Human Resource Management and Criminal Justice Administration.  OCU offers a variety of concentrations in business.  The business professors I’ve encountered are educated in their field of study, and I feel I have benefited from their classes.  Some of the projects that have been assigned include creating a company and internal job postings, newspaper ads, an orientation session, and a job training session to complement that company.  An organized crime class I was in concentrated on learning about biker gangs, and for our final project we organized a bike show on campus.  These are just two examples of coursework you will be expected to finish within these business concentrations.

I hope that this brief overview of Oakland City University has given you a positive impression.  More blogging will come in the future as to other great aspects of OCU.
