Oaks Held by SMOW Again
Oakland City 1-1 St Mary Of The Woods
Two games and a total of four overtimes were not enough to separate Oakland City University and St Mary
of the Woods as they battled to their 2nd 1-1 tie of the season.
A tough game earlier in the season at Terre Haute left the Lady Oaks feeling a little hard done
by not to come away with the spoils. The first half, however, saw the Pomeroys come out the stronger
and the Oakland City defense had to be at its best to keep them at bay.
The Oakland City forwards struggled to come to terms with a few tactical changes from St Mary of
the Woods to combat the quick transition plays, and they were finding it hard to gain controlled possesion.
A quickly taken corner, caught the Lady Oaks defense napping and saw the Pomeroys take a deserved lead with
a poweful header.
This sparked the home team who were growing into the game, Danielle Hinton (Jeffersonville, IN)
and Chrissy Longest both going close before half time.
Six minutes after half time a dangerous through ball from Emily
Gries (Evansville, IN) seemed bound for Hinton before meeting the outstretched hand of a defender. Hinton
bent the resulting free-kick around teh right side of the wall and into the top left corner for the equalizer.
The rest of the game and overtime saw a well-faught match, with the home team just having the upper hand but
finding no way through.
"This was a great game between two very different but well matched teams." Coach Botterill
said, "Again we probably outshot them (13-6) but couldn't find a way to make the superioty count."
