Oaks Held After Overtime

Oakland City 1-1 St Mary Of The Woods

The Lady Oaks took on a strong Mary of the Woods side but despite controlling the game for large periods and creating a number of chances they couldn't find what it took to get the win

With a strong wind against them in the first half the Lady Oaks defense was forced to stand strong, but they soon got the upperhand as Lisa Seib (Evansville, IN) and Amber Kessler (Washington, IN) took a hold of the midfield. With relatively few clear cut chances at either end the half ended pretty evenly fought.

The second half saw the Oaks striving to make the most of the advantage of the wind being behind them although perhaps this forced them to rely on long balls a little too much. St Mary Of The Woods threatened occasionally but it was Oakland City that held the upperhand.

That was until the 77th minute when a sweeping ball to the weak side found the Oakland City defense for once on teh back foot and the St Mary's forward pounced to score.

This spurred on the Oakland city team who poured forward in greater and greater numbers striving to get the equalizer and more that their play deserved. Going close on a number of occasions they still couldn't find the net until with just four minutes of regulation time remaining, Susana Ventura-Gonzalez (Baja California, Mexico) won the ball and fed Danielle Hinton (Jeffersonville, IN) who broke past two defenders before slotting home.

Overtime saw more of the same with Oakland City pressing forward and St Mary's looking dangerous on the break. With just 30s left one of these breaks almost ended in disaster but for Goalkeeper Stephanie Taylor (Morganfield, KY) who reacted like lightening to smother the ball at the feet of teh forward who looked certain to score.

"We played a strong game today against a team that beat us twice last season." Coach Botterill said, "We controlled the game for long periods and with slightly sharper finishing, could, and perhaps should, have come away with the win."
