Oaks Leave it Late
Oakland City 1-0 Kentucky Christian College
Despite out-shooting Kentucky Christian by 22 to 1 it was left to a
71st minute penalty from Emily Gries (Evansville, IN)to give the Lady Oaks the win.
The Lady Oaks were coming off a 2-game unbeaten streak and the extra confidence was evident
as they kept possesion well in midfield and caused Kentucky Christian a number of problems early
on. Danielle Hinton (Jeffersonville, IN) was giving their right back a torrid time pulling wide
and delivering cross after cross that the Oaks just failed to put away.
As the half wore on Kentucky Christian retreated further and further into their own half
restricting the space available to the Lady Oaks' forwards and keeping a large number of players
between the ball and the goal. Oakland City kept attacking but resolute defending made it hard
to fashion any clear cut openings.
After hafl time the pattern continued, the Lady Oaks pushing Kentucky Christian further
and further back but unable to find the finishing touch. Amanda Allen (Browns, IL) went close
as she connected with a back-post cross only to see it drift agonisingly wide and Emily Gries
rose highest to direct a header past the visiting goalkeeper only to see a well-placed defender
hack the ball clear from the goal-line.
Finally Oakland City got the break-through they deserved. Danielle Hinton picked the ball up
on the left side of the Kentucky penalty area and broke past her marker as she closed in on goal.
The defender's clumsy challenge missed the ball but connected with Hinton's leg to bring her down
for the penalty. Gries Made no mistake making it 3 for 3 from the spot this season.
The Lady Oaks continued to press but the single goal proved to be the difference come the final whistle.
"We played exceptionally well in a number of areas today. Our midfield kept possesion well and when
called upon our defense was up to anything Kentucky Christian could throw at them." Coach Botterill
said after the match, "We struggled a little with finishing today but that will come."
