Lady Oaks Open With Win
Oakland City 4-3 Greenville College
The Lady Oaks of Oakland City University started strongly
and held on to record victory in their home and season opener against
a determined Greenville team.
Greenville if anything started the stronger but as the
first half wore on Oakland City began to create more opportunities.
Danielle Hinton (Jeffersonville, In) went close on a break away but
minutes later when put through by Captain Emily Gries (Evansville, IN)
she made no mistake, slotting the ball under the advancing keeper from
15 yards (20.22)
The second half started well for the Lady Oaks taking
only 8.05 to double their lead. A near post corner from Gries was laid
back by Terri McCormick (Mt Vernon, In) and Hinton was on hand to sweep
home her second.
Greenville responded well scoring on a break away after
Danica Fenton was put clear by Teresa Decker at the 10 minute mark.
The Lady Oaks regained their two goal cushion when Gries converted a
penalty after Hinton was felled in the box after 20 minutes.
Amanda Trempert pulled another back on a breakaway to
make it 3-2 with 30 minutes of the second half gone. Gries got her second
goal and second penalty after Chrissy Longest (New Albany) was pushed
in the penalty area and the Lady Oaks looked to have sealed the game.
Greenville made for a tense finish, however, when they
grabbed another goal through Fenton with just 4.52 remaining. Oakland
City held on to record the victory.
Coach Botterill had this to say, "The team played
very well today in patches. After a tough preseason it was good to be
able to get the season underway with a win. We leave the game knowing
a lot more about our strengths and weaknesses and we will work on those
before we travel to Asbury this Saturday."
