Lady Oaks Season Outlook 2008-09

As Coach Jessica Mehringer begins her third season at the reigns of the Oakland City University Women’s Basketball Program, she is thrilled with the discipline and commitment from her  players, who finished 13-17 in 2007-08 en route to a second straight third place finish in the NCCAA Women’s Division I National Championship Tournament in March.

“Only one starter graduated from that 13-17 team,” remembers Mehringer, whose team won four of its last five outings in 2007-08, “and the kids have put in the time over the summer to improve their game, an effort we believe will pay dividends for us as the season progresses this year.

“Our returnees are seasoned and have played a lot of minutes together as underclassmen.” States the OCU Coach, “I am excited about the potential in this group.”

A trio of seniors, a pair of juniors, four sophomores, and a red-shirt freshman  return the for 2008-2009 edition of the “Lady Oaks”, giving Mehringer 10 seasoned performers to look to throughout the 2008-09 hardwood campaign.

In 2007-08, the “Lady Oaks” were led by 5’5” Karissa Walter (Valparaiso, Indiana), who averaged 13.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and handed out 89 assists a year ago, as a junior, all statistics that  led the OCU Women.  Chelsea Miller, a 5’10” guard out of New Castle, Indiana, added 10.9 counters a contest to the OCU effort on the offensive end of the floor as a junior last season.  Miller led the “Oaks” in free throw shooting (91.1 percent, hitting on 72 of 79 attempts) and three-point field-goal shooting, tossing in 60 of 160 (37.5 percent) of her attempts from “long distance”.  She led all NCCAA free throw shooters.  The third senior is 5’9” guard Jana Davis (Charlestown, Indiana). Davis chipped in with 1.5 markers an outing last season.  Her work ethic is amazing.  She has been hampered with injuries throughout her career.  Jana hopes to stay healthy.

Both returning juniors started as sophomores in 2007-08, and both should be even better in 2008-09, beginning with 5’7” shooting guard  Jesse Oxley (Elberfeld, Indiana).  Oxley pumped home 10.6 points a night for the “Lady Oaks” last season, and that statistic is expected to go up this year.

Also returning from last year’s starting lineup is Kristi McVey, a 5’9” forward out of Paris Crossing, Indiana. McVey came up with 6.7 points a fray last season as a sophomore, and the Southwestern High School graduate brings a level of tenacity on defense; which will raise the other “Lady Oaks” level of defense that will be required if  the OCU Women are to be successful in 2008-09.

Valerie White is a 5’9” guard from Stendal, Indiana; leads the sophomore class.  As a freshman, White averaged 3.5 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. Brittany Hart, a 5’8” guard from Evansville, Indiana, chipped in with 1.1 markers a contest, while handing out 12 assists. Samantha Stahl saw extended minutes as a freshman last year, and the 5’6” guard averaged 6.4 points per game, connecting on a torrid 85 percent from the Free Throw line.

Rounding out the sophomore class is Ali Pia, a 5’9” forward out of Escondido, California.  As a freshman last season, Pia accounted for 3.4 a game.

Jane Barclay, a 6’1” center out of Essex, England, was forced to the sidelines for the remainder of the year after the third outing of the season a year ago after a severe infection required abdominal surgery.  She is expected to make an impact for the “Lady Oaks” in 2008-09 as an inside presence.

In addition to the 10 returnees, Mehringer brought in three newcomers, including a junior college transfer and two freshmen to compete for playing time in 2008-09. The transfer is 5’8” junior Candice Jones (Evansville, Indiana), who played her junior college basketball at Olney Central College (Olney, Illinois).

The freshmen are Kayla Sutton, a 6’ center out of Crossville, Illinois, and Rachel Moore, a 6’ inside performer from Wadesville, Indiana.  Sutton was a four-year starter at Carmi (Illinois) High School, where she rammed home over 20 points a game for her career and holds numerous school records for her contributions on the playing floor.  Moore played at North Posey High School and was an integral part of the success the Lady Viking Basketball Program as a high school senior in 2007-08.

The schedule for 2008-2009 is again a tough one, a situation that is no different than any other year.  It is very challenging, with 17 NCAA Division II games on this year’s docket. As usual, the “Lady Oaks” will tangle with several GLVC opponents, with the University of Indianapolis, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, St. Joseph’s, and Bellarmine University all among the rugged opponents on the OCU schedule.

Other NCAA Division II opponents on the “Lady Oak” slate include BYU-Hawaii, Chaminade University, Lincoln University (twice), Urbana University (twice), the University of Alabama-Huntsville (twice), Tusculum University,  Hillsdale College, and the University of Illinois –Springfield.  NAIA schools that are on the schedule always tough Lindsey Wilson College (twice) and Brescia University (twice).

The “Lady Oaks” traditionally play one of the toughest small college schedule in the country, without question, Coach Mehringer has again put together one of the most challenging schedules among the NCAA Division II colleges and universities in Indiana. “We believe this schedule will help prepare us for the post-season,” predicts Mehringer, “We have seen success in the spring because we are prepared throughout the season with tough opponents.”

In terms of overall success of the program this season, Mehringer has challenged her team on the defensive end of the court, stating, “We are seeing real progress on the defensive end of the playing floor, and I believe that will make the difference in tight games.

“Discipline will be the key to our success this season, and I feel if we are all on the same page on the defensive end of the court, that will carry over to the offensive end of the floor.

“We believe that we are strong through Christ, he gives us the strength we need to be successful, and then, it is up to us as to how we use that God given strength and ability to lift each other up in a way that makes us the best we can be at all times.” finishes Mehringer.

Without a doubt, the “Lady Oaks” have a solid nucleus back for the upcoming season, and the new additions to the roster are good ones; however, the schedule is very tough…

But those close to the OCU Women’s Basketball Program believe the “Oaks” are tough, as well…

Coach Mehringer believes this team has all of the ingredients to be successful:  Experience, Overall Size, Shooters, Solid Defenders, Post Presence, and the most important ingredient of all—HEART…

The 2008-09 hardwood campaign for the Oakland City University Women’s Basketball Program is going to an exciting one for the team, the coaches, and the fans…
