Oaks Open With Exhibition Win OCU 2-0 Rose Hulman
The Men's Soccer team opened their season with a 2-0 win against Rose Hulman in a exhibiton game on Thursday. Jonny Lee (Stanley, England) and Gaius Snyder (Jeffersonville, IN) provided the goals. The Mighty Oaks started well, enjoying the lions share of the possesion but failed to really threaten the Rose Hulman goal, other than from a couple of well-worked free-kicks. In fact it was the visitors that came closest to opening the scoring. They broke down the left but when the ball was cut back the forward could only steer it wide. The second half saw the home team immediately looking more threatening both on the wings and through the middle. Brandon Gengelbach (Evanston, IN) twice went close in the space of 5 minutes beating the keeper to a cross before having his header blocked and then arriving just too late on another. The opening goal came after some neat work on the right allowed Lee to burst past his defender in the box, before being pulled down. He made no mistake from the spot. The Mighty Oaks continued to press and went close on a couple of goal mouth scrambles before Snyder doubled the lead. The keeper made a good stop from the Snyder's shot, but the forward reacted quickest to turn home the rebound. Botterill was pleased with both performance and result after the game "I was a little worried after the first half because we'd bossed the possession but they probably had the best chance. I asked for a little more cutting edge in the second half and the boys responded well." |
