OCU Men's Soccer 2009 Season Wrap-Up

The 2009 season was without a doubt the best season in school history. The team set four team records and senior Adem Ali set four individual records.

It was the first winning season in OCU men's soccer history as the team was able to finish at 10-5-3, with ten wins being the most in program history. The team also set records in goals scored with 48, fewest goals allowed with 22, and most shutouts in a season with five. It was also the first season in program history in which the team was nationally ranked, being named in the top ten or receiving votes five weeks out of the season. The Mighty Oaks were able to advance to the NCCAA Mid-East Regional final game where they were eliminated by Conenant College 0-2. The season's only tie came against NCAA Division II power Bellarmine University. The team also finished ranked 12th nationally in winning percentage in the NCCAA as well as 11th in scoring and 12th in fewest goals allowed.

Individually, graduating senior Adem Ali was able to surpass the single season records for goals (16), assists (10), and total points (42). He also set the career mark for assists with 20. He now stands second only to OCU soccer legend Schuyler Redpath in career points and goals. Ali was named NCCAA Honorable Mention All-American as well as First Team All-Region for the 2009 season, finishing ranked 8th nationally in points per game, 10th in goals per game and tied for 13th with teammate Callum Grindlay in assists per game. Grindlay finished the season tied for the third in OCU history for assists in a season with Matt Sturgeon (2002), with eight. Senior Adam Richardville was named NCCAA Scholar Athlete as twelve of the twenty-one players stood with a GPA of 3.0 or better through the fall semester.

Article from Mid-Continent

The number two seed Covenant College from Lookout Mountain, Georgia (11-5-2) shut out number four seed Oakland City University from Indiana (9-5-3), 2-0, and won the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) Division I Mideast Region Men's Soccer Championship, Nov. 21, at Mid-Continent University's Cougar Soccer Complex. Covenant advances to the NCCAA Division I National Tournament, Dec. 2-5, at Austin-Tindall Soccer Complex in Kissimmee, Florida.

Oakland City, an NCAA Division II member, reached Saturday's regional championship match by upsetting number one seed Mid-Continent University (6-5-5), 1-0, in one of Friday's semifinals, and Covenant, a member of the NCAA Division III, scored the game-winning golden goal 2:13 into the first overtime period of its 3-2 victory over number three seed King College from Bristol, Tennessee (10-8-1) in the other semifinal.

Freshman midfielder Colby Robbins assisted on Covenant's first goal, which was scored by junior forward David Pifer, son of Covenant's head coach Nathan Pifer, just 5:49 into the first half, and Robbins then added an important insurance goal in the 79th minute on a direct kick from the corner of the penalty box. Robbins put a long, hard, low, curving pass expertly onto Pifer's foot for the first-half goal. He totaled three goals and two assists in the Scots' two NCCAA Regional matches.

Covenant outshot Oakland City, 21-6, and attempted 8 shots on goal to three for the Oaks and led 7-0 in corner kicks. Covenant goalkeeper, sophomore John Eger, saved 3 OCU shots on goal, and Covenant kept OCU's goalkeepers, Matthew Ball and Vance Graham busy making six saves. Graham saved five Covenant shots on goal in the second half. Pifer tried five shots, three on goal, and forward Julian Allgeier led Covenant with seven shots, three on goal.

Mighty Oaks Win On Road

Oakland City University was coming into the game off a very good result against Bellarmine University. They knew that Kentucky Wesleyan was a dangerous side coming off a narrow 2-1 OT loss to Northern Kentucky who is ranked #2 in the nation. OCU overcame a bit of a sluggish start to create two very good opportunities in the first half and went onto to win comfortably 5-0.

In the 18th minute, Adem Ali tucked away a pass that started with Robert Sherard then went to Callum Grindlay who touched to Ali. Sherard and Grindlay were credited with assists. 7 minutes later, Carlos Castano created a great opportunity for himself by beating several defenders and breaking in from the side. He hit a hard shot the keeper was able to block but not hold onto. Nick Little was right there to head the rebound into the open net for a 2-0 halftime lead.

OCU started the 2nd half more lively enjoying more of the possession. They were rewarded by creating three glorious opportunities. The first saw Nick Little split the defense with a great through ball to Adam Richardville who dribbled in and beat the keeper one on one in 66 minute. A minute later, Richardville and Ali combined with Richardville getting a great ball from Ali. Richardville slotted the ball back to Ali who took a great touch to get by his defender and tuck the ball away from the KWC goalkeeper. Nick Little would finish off the scoring with 10minutes left when Alec Robertson flicked on a free kick.

Callum Grindlay made a deft touch to play Little in one on one with the KWC keeper. Little cooly placed the ball by the keeper. OCU only outshot KWC 10-9 on the day but created 5 one on ones and made the most out of all of them. Matt Ball played the first half for OCU and was credited with 1 save. Graham Vance played the 2nd half and was credited with 5 saves. Kentucky Wesleyan had the advantage on corners 5-1 due largely to a long throw in that created most of the corner kicks. Oakland City University raises it record to 2-0-1 on the year and will take on Greenville College at home on Saturday, September 19 at 3:30
