awards,” stated Oakland City University Men’s Basketball
Coach Mike Sandifar, when notified of the selections of Schumacher and
Hopf, “Nate and Brandon worked extremely hard this year, and
without question, they carried this basketball team on their backs.
“However, beyond the basketball skills and honors, these young
men are role models for every young person in our communities in their
activities off the basketball playing floor.

“Nate was also named an NCCAA Scholar/Athlete for 2008-09,
giving him All-American status in both the classroom and on the playing
floor.

“They have both been a joy to coach and to just be with
throughout this year, and we are most fortunate to have them back for
2009-10…”

Mighty Oaks Season Outlook 2008-09

In Coach Mike Sandifar’s 32 seasons on the sidelines as a basketball coach, the 2008-09 hardwood campaign will mark the first time he will face a year with the loss of all five starters and the team’s sixth man from the season before…

Without question, the “Mighty Oaks” will be “starting over” this season, as 72.3 points and 30.4 rebounds a game are GONE from last season’s 19-12 squad that finished seventh in the National Christian College Athletic Association’s Men’s Division I National Championship last March.

Gone to graduation are three-time All-American center 6’6” Keegan Carmony (14.2 points and 7.9 rebounds a game), 6’5” Eric Sanders (13.8 & 3.8),  6’1” Darius Clark (12.2 & 4.0), 6’ Troy Cox (9.7 & 2.7), and 6’6” Mervyn Clarke (7.1 & 6.1).  Cox led the team in assists with 147, and Mervyn Clarke led the squad in blocked shots with 69, a new school record.

In addition, the team’s sixth man from 2007-08, 6’6” Josh Wilmes, tore his ACL and his MCL in a pick up game two weeks prior to the start of practice and is lost to the team for the year.  The Maryville, Missouri, senior put home 12 points and grabbed 5.9 missed shots a game as a junior for the “Mighty Oaks” last season and had already established himself as the team leader for 2008-09 prior to his season-ending injury.

“Josh could have started for us last year,” says Sandifar, “but we went with the five seniors and Josh gave us instant offense and rebounding off the bench.“

It’s a blow to our team with his loss, but more important, it’s a tough way for a student/athlete to face what he thought was going to be his senior year as a collegiate basketball player.

“The good news is that if everything goes as we hope with the surgery, Josh will come back as a fifth-year senior next year.”

That does not help the “Mighty Oaks” for 2008-09…

However, the OCU Men do return six players and a red-shirt from a year ago, and Sandifar brought in three NCAA Division II transfers and a pair of talented freshmen, all of whom would have made an impact on the 2007-08 hardwood campaign, to give the “Mighty Oaks” a solid roster for 2008-09…

“We had some losses that will probably be really difficult to replace,” believes Sandifar, but we brought in some people who would have made us a lot better last year had they been here then, and our returning players picked up valuable experience, both in games and in practices last year.”

Returning for the “Oaks” will be senior Jonathan Perry (Chicago, Illinois), a 6’5” inside player who added 3.5 points and 2.8 rebounds to the OCU effort last year, juniors Craig Parks (Eldorado, Illionois), a 6’4” forward, who chipped in with 6.6 markers a night in 2007-08, and Chris Sandifar Oakland City, Indiana), a 5’11” guard, who added another 2.0 counters a contest to the OCU offensive effort, and  sophomores Hunter Elliott (Winslow, Indiana), a 6’4” guard/forward Cody Dunn (Southside, Tennessee), and Kermit Smith (Ava, Missouri). Elliott tossed in 2.0 tallies a night for the “Oaks” in 17 outings a year ago, followed by Smith (1.8) and Dunn (1.3).

In addition, Evan Hutchinson, a 5’11” point guard out of Scottsburg, Indiana, red-shirted in 2007-08, and there is little question that he will be one of the key elements as the “Mighty Oaks” drive for success in 2008-09.
Newcomers for the Oakland City University Men’s Basketball Program for 2008-09 are a trio of juniors, beginning with 6’7” Brandon Hopf (St. Anthony, Indiana), a transfer from the University of Southern Indiana, who led his Forest Park High School team to back-to-back IHSAA State Championships in 2005 and 2006, 6’6” Nathan Schumacher (Evansville, Indiana), a transfer from the University of Southern Indiana, who was one of the top rebounders in southern Indiana as a high school senior at Evansville Central High School in 2005-06, and 6’9” Mouhmadou Kane (St. Louis, Senegal, Africa), a transfer from Tiffin University.

The incoming freshmen are 6’4” forward Andrew White (Paoli, Indiana) and 5’10” guard Zach Adams (Tennyson, Indiana).
The remaining members of the 2008-09 OCU roster are 6’2” sophomore Alfredo Aquino (Caracas, Venezuela) and 6’5” freshman Wes Robinson (Princeton, Indiana).

Hopf, Schumacher, and Kane all saw limited minutes in their respective schools last season, but all three are expected to push for starting berths and quality minutes for the “Mighty Oaks” in 2008-09, while White and Adams are also expected to hit the hardwood for extended minutes immediately.

Hopf can score from inside or out, with the ability to hit the three-point shot if left open from “long distance”, making him very difficult to guard over a 40-minute contest, while Schumacher is a rugged forward who can play on the block or out to 15 feet on the floor.  He can also run the floor and will put pressure on opposing frontcourt performers to get back.

Kane runs the floor well for a man of his size and will beat many a post player down the floor throughout the 2008-09 season.

White rammed home 20.4 points a game for his Paoli rams as a senior a year ago, and with game experience, the OCU Coaching Staff thinks he will be an offensive threat every time he touches the ball.

Adams led his team to four consecutive sectional titles from his point guard slot at Tecumseh High School, and he has the quickness and shooting ability to be an outstanding collegiate basketball player before his career is over at OCU.

"We have a long way to go before we can be a good basketball team,” says Sandifar, “However, we have the potential to be a good team if we can learn to play together, play to our strengths, and to hide our weaknesses until we can put the team together as I know we will have to if we are to have any chance to be successful.

“Our schedule is brutal again, and with so many new people who must learn to play together in a hurry, we are a big question mark as we enter the season.

“I know our kids will play hard, and I know we will have to play very well to have any kind of success on the floor.”
Sandifar is correct about the schedule…

The “Mighty Oaks” play Butler University in an exhibition outing on November 8th in Indianapolis, and when the regular season opens a week later, it doesn’t get any easier for the Oakland City University Men, as they travel to Nashville, Tennessee, to take on Lipscomb University (the team beaten on a last second shot by Duke last March), then drive to Evansville on November 18th to tangle with the Purple Aces of the University of Evansville.

And that is just the first week…

A day later, the team, along with about 80 team boosters, leave for the island of Oahu in Hawaii, where they will play two games against No. 8 (preseason) Winona State University (Defending NCAA II National Champion) and Hawaii-Hilo University.

In addition, the “Mighty Oaks” will challenge the likes of Austin Peay State University (NCAA I), the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Quincy University, the University of Alabama-Huntsville (twice), Urbana University (twice), and SIU-Edwardsville (NCAA I).

Others that dot the OCU docket include Wilmington College, Robert Morris-Springfield, Miami-Middletown, Knoxville College, OSU-Mansfield, OSU-Marion, Lincoln Christian, and Central Christian.

“Our early season schedule is the toughest in the country among any NCAA Division II colleges or universities,” predicts Sandifar, “but, as an independent at the NCAA Division II level, we play the teams that will play us.

“We have some talent, some quickness, some size, some mental toughness, and our players are really good people, as well, but we must find a great chemistry early if we are to compete with the teams on our schedule—if we can do that, we could be a pretty good basketball team by tournament time.”
Sandifar’s “Mighty Oaks” have put together a solid 329-185 (.641) record in his 17 years as the head men’s basketball coach at Oakland City University, 236-128 from 1987-99, and 93-57 from 2003-08.  He has taken the “Oaks” to post-season play in each of this 17 years on the sidelines, winning a national championship in 1999, a national runner-up spot in 1994 and 2006, a third place finish in 1994, and a fourth place finish in 1997.

As a high school coach in the rugged class system in Indiana, Sandifar’s teams won four conference championships and put together a 98-49 record, including a 50-16 mark in a three-year stint at New Washington High School (the best three-year record in the state) and a 26-16 standard at Pike Central High School.

At Averett College (now University) Sandifar’s teams went 37-42 in three years, after the school had gone 28-106 in the eight years prior to his arrival, while his teams were 93-62 at Southwestern College (1981-87), including three trips to the NAIA post-season, a conference title, two conference runners-up, a third place finish, and a fourth place finish in his six seasons.

Loss of five starters or not…So many new players or not… Sandifar will have his “Mighty Oaks” ready…He always does…
