Urbana Basketball Games to be Rescheduled Due to Weather

The Mighty Oaks and Lady Oaks were sheduled to face the Urbana University Blue Knights Saturday, February 6, in Urbana, Ohio. These games have been postponed because of a snow storm facing the Urbana area and should be rescheduled soon. More information will be provided when dates and times are released.

Oakland City Routs Knoxville for Ninth Straight Win

Oakland City, IN - The Mighty Oaks hosted the Knoxville College Bulldogs in the Johnson Center on Wednesday, February 3, exactly one year after beating them 106-90. Knoxville, trying to rebuild their program after having cancelled it earlier in the year, lost by the final score of 102-45.

The Oaks opened the game with a 21-7 scoring run and never looked back as the visiting Bulldogs were never able to even tie the game after the opening tip. The Mighty Oaks were able to increase their lead to 22 at 35-13, but the Bulldogs went on a small 5-0 run to cut the lead to 17. Oakland City responded by going on an 18-7 run to close out the first half with a twenty-eight point advantage at 53-25.

The second half saw the Mighty Oaks open by scoring the first sixteen points of the half to push their lead to 44 with just over thirteen minutes remaining. Knoxville was unable to make any significant push in the game as they were held to a dismal 30.3% shooting from the field along with a 15.4% from the free throw line. This compared to Oakland City's 52.6% field goal percentage and a season-best 91.7% from the line.

The Mighty Oaks were led in scoring by Brandon Hopf with 22 as he makes his run at 1,000 points in an Oaks uniform. He now stands at 975 points for his Mighty Oak career. Nate Schumacher scored 16 points while pulling down a game-high 20 rebounds. Craig Parks came off the bench to score 14 points and Jared Maners added 11. Josh Maggard scored 8 points while leading the game in assists with 11 while snatching a team-high 2 steals and blocking one shot. Every Mighty Oaks scored, except for Brett Wilson. Mo Kane and Alfredo Aquino each tallied 6 points on 2-4 shooting off the bench. Knoxville was led in scoring by Raymond Jones with 21 points. Leon Boddie, Jr. scored 12 points while pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds.

Next up for the Mighty Oaks is Urbana University on Saturday, February 6, in Urbana Ohio. The game is scheduled to tip off at 3:00 pm. Oakland City edged out Urbana 80-74 on January 16, in the Johnson Center.

Mighty Oaks Take Seventh In a Row With Victory Over Ohio State University-Marion

Oakland City, IN - The Mighty Oaks scored 53 while allowing only 17 points in the first half on their way to an easy 96-47 victory over the visiting OSU-Marion Scarlet Wave on Saturday afternoon in the Johnson Center.

Oakland City opened the game by making their first ten jumpers to open up a 26-4 lead midway through the first half. The Scarlet Wave was able to steady the scoring somewhat, but the Oaks finished the half with a 16-3 run to take a 53-17 lead into the locker room.

The second half saw more of the same from the Oaks as they never let up in either their defense or their scoring. Mo Kane, scoring for only the second game this season and seeing over ten minutes of action for the first time, scored a season high 8 points while pulling down 4 rebounds as the Oaks cruised to an easy victory to push their season record to 14-6.

Leading the way for the Oaks were seniors Brandon Hopf and Nate Schumacher with 16 points each followed by Jared Maners, Josh Maggard and Chris Sandifar with 9 points. Schumacher pulled down a game-high 9 rebounds. Josh Maggard dished out a game-high 7 assists followed closely by Jared Maners with 6. OSU-Marion was led in scoring by Brandon Geiger with 18 points. Mark McDuffie added 12 points and Kenny Hosp pulled down a team-high 5 rebounds in a losing effort.

The Oaks play again in the Johnson Center Wednesday, February 3, when they take on the Knoxville College Bulldogs. The game tips at 7:00 pm.

OCU Beats Temple Baptist For Sixth Straight Victory

Oakland City, IN - Oakland City scored over one hundred points for only the fourth time this season as they continue their winning ways by beating an athletic Temple Baptist College Rams team Saturday, January 23, in the Johnson Center.

Both teams began the game shooting over sixty percent in the first ten minutes, but it was the home team that held the lead at 30-24 with ten minutes to play in the half. Temple Baptist cut the lead to three at 37-34 before Oakland City responded by going on a 10-1 run to open up their largest lead of the half at 47-35. The Rams were able to keep the rest of the half close, cutting the lead to nine at 56-47.

In the second half, the Rams shooting cooled off, dropping from 54.5% in the first half to 31.1% in the second. The Might Oaks, however, were able to increase their shooting percentage from 52.4% in the first half to an even 60% in the second half. The Oaks scored the first two baskets of the second half, but the Rams responded by trimming the lead to five points at 64-59. Oakland City responded by going on a 14-4 run to take a 15 point lead at 78-63 with just over nine minutes to play. Temple Baptist was never able to get back into the game, and the Oaks continued to increase their lead, winning by 23 points, their largest lead of the game, at 103-80.

Leading the way for the Oaks was Jared Maners who connected on 11-17 field goal attempts to score a game high 26 points. Brandon Hopf added 18 points, followed by Nate Schumacher and Josh Maggard with 13 points each. Maggard dished out a game high 6 assists and Scumacher pulled down a game high 16 rebounds. Jeremiah Mitchell scored 12 points for the Oaks coming off the bench. Josh Wilmes nearly tallied a double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds and scoring 9 pionts. The Rams were led in scoring by Peter Jackson with 21 points. Eric Head scored 13 points while grabbing a team leading 11 rebounds.

The Might Oaks return to action Wednesday, January 27, as the travel to face St. Louis College of Pharmacy in St. Louis, Missouri. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:00 pm.

Schumacher Sets Rebounding Record as Oaks Win Again

Nashville, TN - The Oakland City Men's Basketball team traveled to face the Flames of Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, January 19. The Mighty Oaks came out victorious 94-53 behind Nate Schumacher's 18 points and a school record 33 rebounds.

The Mighty Oaks opened the game with a 17-0 scoring run and never looked back, pushing the lead to as many as twenty-seven points before the Flames were able come back somewhat to cut the lead to twenty-three at the half at 44-21.

The second half saw Oakland City open with a scoring run much like the first half, scoring the first twenty-one points of the half to open up a 44 point lead. The Flames were able to slow down the Oaks, but never were able to get the lead under 36 the rest of the game as the Mighty Oaks prevailed in their fifth straight game, winning 94-53.

The Mighty Oaks were led in scoring by Brandon Hopf with 21 points followed by Nate Schumacher with 18 points and a NCAA D-II leading 33 rebounds. Jared Maners scored 17 on 6-7 shooting from the field. Josh Maggard added 14 points while dishing out a game high 8 assists and 3 steals. The Flames were led in scoring by Bradley Elkins with 19 points.

The Oaks return to action Saturday, January 23, in the Johnson Center as the take on Temple Baptist. The game will tip at 3:00 pm.

Oakland City Wins Homecoming Thriller Over Urbana

Oakland City, IN - The Mighty Oaks, welcoming the 1960 NAIA National tournament team, hosted the Urbana University Blue Knights Saturday, January 16, in the Johnson Center. Oakland City was able to hold off the Blue Knights, thanks to Jared Maners season high 30 points, and win by the final score of 80-74.

The first half saw Urbana lead the game for the first ten minutes as the Mighty Oaks struggled to find their rhythm. However, after trailing by as many as five points, Oakland City took their first lead of the game at 19-16, a lead they would never give up despite high-pressure defense by the Blue Knights. Jared Maners scored 11 in the first half and Josh Wilmes pulled down six rebounds despite getting into early foul trouble.

The Blue Knights kept looking as if they would at any time take over the game, but the Mighty Oaks proved to be too much to handle as each time Urbana made a run the Mighty Oaks responded with one of their own.

The Mighty Oaks were led in scoring by Jared Maners with 30 points. Nate Schumacher added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Hopf scored 17 while leading the team in rebounding with 12. Josh Maggard continued his solid play with five points, eight assists and a game high four steals. Jeremiah Mitchell, despite scoring only two points and pulling down a single rebound, held Urbana's offence in check much of the game with his stifling defense.

The Mighty Oaks improved to 10-6 on the season and are set to travel to face Free Will Baptist on Tuesday, January 19, at 7:00 pm before returning home to face off against Temple Baptist Saturday, January 23, at 3:00 pm.

Mighty Oaks Continue to Win, Maggard Resets Own Record

Oakland City, IN - Oakland City hosted the Saints from Central Christian College of the Bible Wednesday, January 13, in the Johnson Center. Josh Maggard, who previously tied the school record with 8 steals in their last game, put a new school record in the books by recording 11 steals as the Mighty Oaks won easily 104-65.

Brandon Hopf scored 13 and Josh Wilmes scored 12 points in the first half to help the Mighty Oaks to a 47-34 halftime lead over the visiting Saints. Central Christian Junior gaurd Reggie Evans scored 21 of his team's 34 points in the half thanks to 6-14 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.

OCU held Evans to only five second half points as the Mighty Oaks pulled away in the second half behind a blistering 61.5 percent shooting and a streak of eleven consecutive made free throws. Brandon Hopf was the leading scorer for the Oaks, tallying 26 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. Nate Schumacher again led OCU in rebounding with 13 while scoring 17 points. Josh Wilmes finished the game with 14 points and Jared Maners added 10. Josh Maggard, though he didn't score a point, tallied a double-double by dishing out 10 assists and racking up a school record 11 steals. Maggard's 11 steals ranks him second in the nation in the NCAA D-II for most steals in a game this season.

Next up for the Mighty Oaks is Urbana University Saturday, January 16, at 3:00 pm. Saturday's game is Homecoming where members of the 1960 NAIA National team will be recognized along with the three newly inducted members of the Oakland City University Athletic Hall of Fame.

OCU Men Roll Behind Josh Maggard's School Record

Oakland City, IN - The Mighty Oaks played host to the Ohio University-Lancaster Cougars Saturday, January 9, in the Johnson Center, winning by twenty-seven points in what could be the best game Oakland City has played thus far this season.

After giving up the first basket of the game, and trading baskets for some time after that, the Mighty Oaks gained a nine point advantage at 20-11 with thirteen minutes to play in the first half. OCU pushed the lead to fifteen at halftime at 45-30 thanks to Josh Wilmes's 14 points on 7-8 shooting from the field and Nate Schumacher's seven points and nine rebounds.

The second half saw Oakland City steadily increase their lead behind Josh Maggard's eight assists in the second half alone and Brandon Hopf's 15 second-half points. The Cougars were held in check all game, managing to connect on a mere 38 percent of their field goal attempts while turning the ball over twenty times.

The Mighty Oaks were led in scoring for the game by Brandon Hopf with 18, followed by Josh Wilmes and Jared Maners with 16 points each and Nate Schumacher who added 12 to go with his 17 rebounds, matching his season high. Josh Maggard finished the game with eight points while dishing out a season high 12 assists and tying the OCU record with 8 steals in one game, a record he now holds with former Oakland City standout Mervyn Clarke.

Next up for the Mighty Oaks is Central Christian College of the Bible on Wednesday, January 13, in the Johnson Center. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 pm and the game is being sponsored by Applebee's in Princeton, Indiana.

Mighty Oaks Beat World Harvest

Oakland City, IN - Oakland City played host to the Warriors from World Harvest College Tuesday, January 5, in the Johnson Center. The Warriors entered the game with a record of 8-2 after falling the previous night at Brescia by a mere three points. Oakland City carried a record of 6-6 into the game after having dropped thier previous game at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

World Harvest opened by scoring the first seven points of the game, and led throughout the entire first half by as many as seven as Oakland City fought to keep the game within reach. After taking a 31-25 lead with just over one minute to play in the half, World Harvest gave up the final three points of the half to take a three point halftime lead at 31-28.

Oakland City came out slow in the first half, but World Harvest missed three of their first four shots of the half as well and allowed the Oaks to take their first lead of the game at 37-36. The Mighty Oaks slowly built on that lead the rest of the half, increasing it to as many as thirteen points at 64-51. World Harvest tried to make a comeback but Oakland City was not to be denied and, thanks to connecting on 8-10 free throws down the stretch, the Mighty Oaks came out on top by a final score of 76-66.

Oakland City improved to 7-6 on the season behind Nate Schumachers ninth double-double of the season. Schumacher had 22 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs, to lead the Oaks, followed by Brandon Hopf's 20 points, Jared Maners's 13 and Josh Wilmes's 10. Josh Maggard scored only five points by dished out a game high eight assists and leading the team in steals with three. World Harvest was led in scoring by Wayne Johnson Jr. who scored 17 points. The Warriors' leading rebounder was Rashad Scott with 8.

Oakland City will face Ohio University-Lancaster Saturday, January 9, in the Johnson Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm. Peggy's Gymnastics and Dance will be perfoming at halftime.

Oakland City Drops First Home Game of the Season

Oakland City, IN - The Mighty Oaks hosted the Tornados of Bevard College Wednesday night in the Johnson Center, 74-63. Amore Pizza sponsored the game and free pizzas were given away during timeouts.

Oakland City scored the first five points of the game and led by as many as nine points in the first half, but Brevard was able to outscore the Oaks 15-3 to close out the first half with a two point lead at 28-26. The Tornados stretched the lead to five early in the second half before a pair of free throws by Brandon Hopf and two jumpers, one by Craig Parks and another by Hopf, brought the lead back to the home team at 41-40. The lead was shortlived, however, and Brevard was able to close out the game, holding the Oaks without a field goal in the final four minutes and finishing the game on a 10-2 run. Brevard won the game by eleven, the final score being 74-63.

The Mighty Oaks were led in scoring by Hopf with 17 points, followed by Craig Parks and Nate Schumacher with 11 and Jared Maners with 10. Maners and Schumacher each tallied a double-double for the Oaks as Maners dished out 10 assists and Schumacher pulled down a game high 15 rebounds to lead the team for the thirteenth consecutive game, dating back to last season. The Tornados were led in scoring by Josh Roper with 23 points, followed by Jonathan Whitson who scored a double-double of his own with 15 points and 13 boards.

The Oaks fall to 6-5 on the season. They next travel to Huntsville, Alabama, to face the University of Alabama-Huntsville Saturday, January 2, at 7:00 pm, before returning home to face World Harvest January 5 at 7:00 pm in the Johnson Center.

Mighty Oaks Win Big On Integra Bank Night

Oakland City, IN - Oakland City hosted the Hilltoppers from Ohio University-Chillicothe Saturday afternoon in the Johnson Center, winning by a final score of 105-69. Coach Sandifar said about the game, "This is probably the best our team has played so far this year. We have come a long way, and we have a long way left to go, but we are making significant progress in the right direction."

The Mighty Oaks began the game by scoring the first seven points and had built an eleven point lead at 16-5 before the Hilltoppers started to get into the flow of the game. OU-Chillicothe climbed back into contention, cutting the lead to five points at 32-27 with just over five minutes to play in the first half, but Oakland City we on a 24-6 run to close out the half with a twenty-three point advantage.

The second half saw the Mighty Oaks push the lead even higher, reaching fourty-six at 94-48 with eight minutes to play in the game. The Hilltoppers were able to take advantage of missed shots and turnovers to cut the lead to 33 with just under a minute remaining, but Alfredo Aquino's three point basket capped off a good shooting afternoon for the Mighty Oaks and they went on to win 105-69.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Oaks who were led by Jared Maners with 21 points, followed by Josh Wilmes with 17, Nate Schumacher with 15, Brandon Hopf with 12 and Josh Maggard with 11. Schumacher and Hopf led the team with eight rebounds each. Maggard dished out seven assists and Wilmes assisted on six of the Mighty Oaks baskets. The Hilltoppers were led by Josh Kellough and Shannon Kohn with 16 and 15 points respectively. Nick Milliken led OU-Chillicothe in rebounding with seven.

The Mighty Oaks return to action in the Johnson Center as they take on Brevard Wednesday, December 30, at 7:00 pm.


Oakland City Men Rout Boyce Bulldogs

Oakland City, IN - OCU hosted the Boyce College Bulldogs Tuesday evening in the Johnson Center, winning easily 89-38. Coach Sandifar started a different lineup than usual, consisting of Jeremiah Mitchell, Noah Rasche, Brandon Hopf, Chris Sandifar and Hunter Elliott.

The Mighty Oaks scored the first seven points of the ballgame, but the Bulldogs fought back to cut the lead to five at 16-11 after ten minutes had elapsed. Oakland City respoded by going on a 15-2 run and went into the locker room with a 14 point advantage at 34-20.

The second half opened with the usual starting lineup of Nate Schumacher, Josh Wilmes, Brandon Hopf, Jared Maners and Josh Maggard. The Bulldogs never really made any sort of run as the Oaks tallied 55 second half points while allowing only Boyce to score only 18. The Oaks were led in scoring by Brandon Hopf with 22 points in only 19 minutes of play. Nate Schumacher scored 14 and added a game high 12 rebounds, all coming in the second half. Josh Wilmes scored 12 and Brett Wilson chipped in 11 rounding out the Oaks in double figures. Alfredo Aquino scored his first points of the season, adding 6 points on 2-3 shooting in eight minutes of action. Leading the way for Boyce College was Jordan Doenges who had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Mighty Oaks play again Saturday, December 19, as the take on Ohio University-Chillicothe. The game tips at 3:00 pm.



Mighty Oaks Fall to NCAA D-I Lipscomb

Nashville, TN - The Mighty Oaks traveled to Lipscomb University to take on the NCAA Division I Bisons Saturday night. After leading 20-19 ten minutes into the game and seeing a tie game at 33-33, the Mighty Oaks held with the Bison through the first half, trailing at halftime 41-49. Oakland City came out in the second half with back to back baskets by Jared Maners to cut the lead to three. Josh Wilmes’s jumper cut the lead to one at 51-50 with just under seventeen minutes to play in the game, but that would be the last time the game would be close. Lipscomb went on a 31-4 run to put the game away. Only six OCU players played more than seven minutes compared to eleven Lipscomb players. The Mighty Oaks were led in scoring by Jared Maners and Josh Maggard with sixteen points apiece. Nate Schumacher’s streak of consecutive games with double figure scoring and rebounding ended at three as he scored eleven points and had nine rebounds.


Schumacher Has Fifth Double-Double of the Season as the Mighty Oaks Down Concordia Seminary

Oakland City, IN - The Oakland City men's basketball team hosted the Preachers from Concordia Seminary Saturday afternoon in the Johnson Center, winning by a final score of 89-73.

Concordia never led in the game, but was able to keep the game within reach during the first half after the Oaks opened the game on a 19-2 run. By halftime, the score was 38-32 in favor of Oakland City. Concordia began the second half by scoring six points while Oakland City scored only two and the lead was cut to two points. The Mighty Oaks responded by a scoring run of 15-3, six of which went to senior Nate Schumacher, to open up a 14 point advantage at 55-41. The Preachers again responded, thanks to the hot hand of Stephen Carretto, and cut the lead to four at 70-66 with just over six minutes to play in the game, but Oakland City prevailed in the end, winning by a comfortable sixteen points.

Leading the way for the Mighty Oaks was Schumacher, who was nearly perfect from the field, scoring 25 points on 11-12 shooting to go with his game high 12 rebounds. Craig Parks scored 14 and Brandon Hopf added 13 while Jared Maners scored 10 to go with his team high eight assists. The Preachers were led by Carretto, who put up 34 points while shooting 9-15 from three point range. Wil Stelzer scored 11 to go with his game high 9 assists.

The Mighty Oaks are in action again Wednesday, December 9th, when the travel to face Quincy. That game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 pm.

Oakland City Mighty Oaks Prevail Over Principia

Oakland City University hosted the Panthers from Principia College Wednesday night in the Johnson Center the day after returning from thier most recent games in Hawaii.

Principia, entering the night with a 1-5 record, played tough, but were unable to hold off the taller and quicker Oaks. Oakland City led at halftime by a score of 30-23 and had only built the lead to eight with thirteen minutes remaining in the game before going on 12-0 run to push the lead to twenty with just over ten minutes left. Principia did their best to come back, but the Oaks were able to hold them off, winning with the final score being 75-58.

The Oaks were led in scoring by Nathan Schumacher with 20 points to go with his game high 13 rebounds. Jared Maners added 19 points of his own. Zach Adams came off the bench to score 11 points in only 12 minutes of play. Josh Maggard dished out a game high 8 assists. The Panthers were led in scoring by Sam Douglas who scored a game high 28 points.

 

2010 Home Opener Sees Easy Victory

The Mighty Oaks played well on opening day in the Johnson Center Saturday afternoon, beating Ohio State University-Mansfield 124-66.

In a solid first half effort, in which Oakland city trailed only twice and each time by only one point, senior Nathan Schumacher tallied a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Oaks went into halftime with a 63-34 lead and never looked back.

The Mighty Oaks had six players score in double figures. Sophomore Zach Adams led the way with 20 points to go with a game high three steels. Schumacher finished the game with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Josh Wilmes, returning to action after missing the first game of the season, scored 18 points on 7-12 shooting including 4-7 from beyond the arc. Hunter Elliott (15 points), Brandon Hopf (13 points), and Jared Maners (13 poitns) rounded out the double figure scorers. Maners also chipped in with a game high 12 assists to go along with his seven rebounds.

The Mansfield Mavericks were led in scoring by Tim Stalkolich with 25 points and Sam Barnhill with 20. Curtis Remy scored 10 for the Mavericks to go along with his 7 assists.

The Oaks are scheduled to face BYU-Hawaii November 25th and 28th before returning home to face Principia December 2nd at 7:00 pm.

 

The Mighty Oaks Take Season Opener at Logan University

The Oakland City men's basketball team travelled to the campus of Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Missouri Tuesday evening for their season opener against Logan University (formerly Logan Chiropractic).

After a slow first half in which the Oaks only managed a nine point lead at 39-30, the Oaks offense started to get on track in the second period. The second half began by seeing the Oaks open up a 24 point lead thanks to a 17-2 run. With nine minutes left in the game Logan had cut the lead to 17 but Oakland City responded with more defensive pressure and closed out the game for an opening win of 87-66.

Nathan Schumacher led all scorers with 17 while pulling down a game high 16 rebounds. Brandon Hopf scored 16, while newcomer Brett Wilson added 15 coming off the bench. Newcomer Jared Maners scored 12 to go with his game high 9 assists. Leading the way for Logan was Justin Baker with 16 points, 11 boards and 5 blocked shots.

The Oaks are scheduled to face OSU-Mansfield Saturday, November 21, at 3:00 pm in the Johnson Center.
