Sandy Black

My name is Sandy Black, and I work with prospective students from Missouri and Arkansas.  If you would like to learn how OCU could be the perfect fit for you, please feel free to contact me at or 573-686-3526. You may also call the Admissions Office toll free at 800-737-5125.

Who Am I?
I live in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and I am married to Ron Black.  I graduated from OCU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education.  I retired after teaching high school English and working as a guidance counselor.  I love encouraging teenagers and talking about education, so this job is a perfect fit for me.  My favorite pastime is enjoying my family.  My daughter and her family live in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and she has two little girls: Molly, age 8 and Sadie, age 6.  I also love to cook and travel.

What do I love about OCU?
OCU has a very special place in my heart.  My pastor introduced me to the campus when I was a senior in high school, and that changed my world.  The encouragement from my professors and the friendships I formed there opened up a whole new reality for me.  I learned to value myself more, have more confidence, and develop an awareness of talents I did not know I had.  For instance, I discovered I love drama, but that came only after a professor took a personal interest in me and encouraged me.  The small student-professor ratio allows the professors to take such an interest in their students.  That is what I love about OCU.  It is a place where a student not only gets a great education but also personal enrichment.  Another reason I love OCU is because I met my husband there!  We had a lot of fun at OCU and made lifelong friends there.

How will you know if OCU is the perfect fit For YOU?
First, you have to know what you are looking for.  Make a list of qualities that you want in a school.  What size school do you want?  Do you want to be anonymous, or do you want to have personal attention from your professors?  What are your strengths and weaknesses, and how will that influence your choice of schools?  Is a Christian environment important to you?  I also encourage you to make a visit to the campus; that will let you know a lot about whether you fit at OCU.  Every campus has its own unique personality.  By visiting the campus, you will be able to experience that uniqueness.
