OCU ACCREDITATION AND GUIDELINES
Oakland City University's School of Education is accredited by the Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB) and the National Counsel for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) to offer approved programs in the following areas:
- Elementary (primary and intermediate)
- Junior high and middle school (early adolescence)
- Secondary (adolescence and young adulthood)
- All-grade education
Approved, standards-based program curricula outline four years of work leading to the appropriate degree are designed to meet the requirements for licensure.
Admission to Oakland City University does not guarantee admission to a teacher education program. Admission to an OCU teacher education program does not insure admission to student teaching.
Candidates graduating with a bachelor degree and teacher licensure must have a 2.50 grade point average overall and a 2.50 grade point average in the license-area major and professional education courses.
Candidates in the following areas are limited to four (4) courses having the Pass/No Fail option:
- Elementary (early childhood, primary, and intermediate)
- Junior high and middle school (early adolescence)
- Secondary (adolescence and young adulthood)
- All-grade education
No pass/fail options may be taken in professional education, major areas, freshman English, or senior seminar courses.
CPR AND HEIMLICH MANEUVER CERTIFICATION
The state of Indiana requires those seeking a license as a teacher, administrator, or school services professional to have certification in the following:
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) that includes test demonstration on a mannequin
- Removing a foreign body causing obstruction in an airway
- The Heimlich maneuver
A course may be taken online at your own pace, or you may arrange an in-house training session with the Gibson County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Payment for the training may be made by check, cash, money order, Visa, or MasterCard.

INITIAL LICENSE APPLICATION
All Oakland City University graduates must apply for their initial teaching licenses by following the instructions below.
- Access the LVIS portal at the following link and create a profile: https://license.doe.in.gov/.
- Log in and follow the instructions on-screen. Make sure to select OCU as the recommending insitituion.

LICENSE RENEWAL
All Oakland City University graduates must apply for their initial teaching licenses by following the instructions below.
To have your license renewed, please provide the following:
- Access the LVIS portal at the following link and create a profile: https://license.doe.in.gov/.

Log in and follow the instructions on-screen. Make sure to select OCU as the recommending insitituion.
**In order to have your license renewed, you will need to take all six hours of credit at Oakland City University.
