RCF Staff and Programming Awarded IDOC Commissioner’s Honors

Rockville, Indiana - (October 17, 2016) – In partnership with the Indiana Department of Correction Commissioner Bruce Lemmon, the Indiana Criminal Justice Association (ICJA) recognizes the Department’s top performing staff and programming and the dynamic effect they have on Indiana’s offender population.  This year’s awards were presented at the 82nd Annual Indiana Criminal Justice Association’s Fall Conference held October 4th through the 7th at the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City Indiana.

Rockville Correctional Facility Caseworker Autumn Wyres has been recognized with the Commissioner’s Rising Star Award, while Oakland City University Education Site Coordinator Kara Burgess received the Commissioner’s Award for Site Manager of the Year for her work art RCF.  The RCF Education Department also received the Commissioner’s Award for Adult School of the Year.

Autumn Wyres was instrumental in preparing RCF staff for a recent audit of RCF’s successful implementation of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA).  PREA is a federal initiative enforcing a zero tolerance policy for sexual assaults and sexual harassment within IDOC facilities.

Kara Burgess earned recognition through her stewardship of the RCF Education Department that in her words “has been charged with the difficult task of mending the broken, guiding the lost, and cultivating a love for learning in our students.”  Her effective coaching of her staff has succeeded in those efforts.

Through the guidance, coaching, and teamwork among Kara’s staff and the positive difference they are making in the lives of the RCF offender population, the RCF Education Department gained the top honor of Adult School of the Year.

The ICJA is a multi-disciplinary member organization whose mission includes enhancing criminal justice in Indiana by way of enriching the criminal justice professional and the system as a whole.

RCF Superintendent Julie Stout said, “It is gratifying that Commissioner Lemmon and the ICJA Board of Directors have recognized these staff and the remarkable differences they are making on behalf of the citizens of Indiana.  Their work ethic and dedication are truly commendable.”
