Standing in the familiar Well House, Cindy Murphy, ‘70 (l) and Joyce Adams, ‘71 take a trip down memory lane.

On a hot August day, Cynthia Murphy, ’70 of Vincennes, Indiana and Joyce Adams, ’71 of Fairfield, Illinois returned to OCU for a visit.  Cynthia (left) is in her 35th year teaching at South Knox HS.  Joyce has just retired after 36 years of teaching kindergarten at New Hope.  Both expressed amazement at all the changes on campus.  They spent a couple of hours visiting the bookstore, Murray Center, Chapman Seminary and Cockrum Hall.  However, the highlight of the afternoon for them was visiting their old dorm rooms on third floor of Brokaw Hall.  They laughed to see some of the same furniture that was used when they were here.  They were also surprised to see internet and phone hookups in each dorm room.  This was a far cry from the one pay phone per floor back in the 70’s.  The ladies were overheard discussing panty raids, green beanies and how Mildred Vaughn (head of housekeeping until her death last year) mothered all the girls in the dorms. While they admired all the changes and growth, Joyce summed it up best, “It still feels the same.”

Annual Phonothon October 1-15

Once again, the Reception Room of the Student Life Center will become “Phonothon Central” for this annual fundraising event.  Student and volunteer callers will be contacting friends and alumni beginning Oct.1 and running through Oct. 15.  There will be phones set up for sixteen callers each evening from 6pm to 9pm.  Prizes will be awarded each evening for the largest pledge and most money raised.  A letter from Dr. Davis will be mailed out in September to all friends and alumni asking for their donation when the volunteer calls.  An envelope will be enclosed for those preferring to mail the contribution in prior to the Phonothon.  The cause this year will be securing furnishings and technology for the new Kennedy Center.  The new building will be housing classes this semester.  While the matching Lilly monies enabled the Center to be constructed debt-free, the Phonothon monies will be used for the finishing touches.  Please give generously when a student volunteer calls.  Your support is truly appreciated.
